Edward Grieg’s Piano concerto in A minor Op. 16 and his suite “Peer Gynt” are so well-known that they do not need an introduction. The bright harmonies and lyricism in conjunction with a youthful enthusiasm have endeared those compositions to audiences around the world. The soloist will be the internationally acclaimed Armenian pianist Marianna Shirinyan, who has been in much demand across Europe. Sergei Prokofiev’s work is the polar opposite of Grieg’s pieces.
Prokofiev wrote music for Eisenstein’s film “Alexander Nevsky” (narrating the victory of the Russian Prince Alexander over the German invaders in the 13th century), and then remade it into a symphonic cantata. This 7-movement work is considered a “synthesis of illustrative film music, symphonic program music, opera, and song”. The cantata was met with great success and has become part of the core repertoire of the composer. The concert at the Philharmonic features a song from the 6th movement, mourning the slain heroes, masterfully sung by Ewa Podleś. As one opera blogger wrote, “one gets the impression that no one will ever sing it better... Wonderful music, a divine performance!”
